Energy management basics

Most productivity advice assumes you have infinite energy. The real constraint isn’t time—it’s how much you can sustain before your focus and judgment slip. Energy management is about working with your body instead of against it.

Your energy follows a pattern

You probably have a peak window—maybe 90 minutes to 3 hours after you wake up—when your brain is sharpest. That’s when you should do your hardest work. Everything else is a compromise.

Protect the peak

Don’t schedule meetings in your peak. Don’t check email first thing. Don’t let other people’s urgency hijack your best hours. Block your calendar for deep work and treat it like a non-negotiable meeting.

Use the trough for recovery

The afternoon slump is real. Instead of fighting it with caffeine or willpower, use it for admin, shallow work, or a walk. Your brain needs downtime to consolidate what you learned in the morning.

Energy management isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing the right things at the right time.
